The first Orthodox monastery was opened in South Africa
In South Africa (South Africa), opened the first Orthodox monastery, belonging to the Alexandrian Orthodox Church.
The monastery was created by the works of Metropolitan Seraphim of Ioannoupol (now head of the Metropolitan of Zimbabwe and Angola) in a desert area an hour from the city of Johannesburg, the website Agionoros.ru reports with reference to the agency Romfea.gr .
It is dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker , Nectarius of Aeginsky and Paissy Svyatogorets .
In the monastery five nuns are working, and his confessor is Archimandrite Apostle Apostolakis , who also founded two women's monasteries in Kenya and Tanzania.
During his visit to South Africa, on January 19, Patriarch Alexandrian Theodore visited the monastery, where he made the enthronement of the first abbess of Orthodoxy .
Addressing believers, Patriarch Theodore noted that monasticism "is not a disregard for the world, but a call for its transformation, transformation in Christ and salvation."
